Marin Marais, son of a simple Parisian shoemaker, learns to play the viol under the aegis of the best master of the time, Monsieur de Sainte Colombe. The student soon surpassed the master and became one of the greatest musicians of the court of Louis XIV. This exceptional artist succeeded in adapting the art of the ancient violists and lutenists to a more modern style and remains a major figure of this fabulous French viol school which reached its full maturity at the beginning of the 18th century.
