London 1740, les jardins de Vauxhall

In the 18th century, London was in the midst of an urban transformation: the spaces dedicated to music extended to the gardens, which were conceived as new places of culture; Vauxhall, the most famous of them, was a real theme park and its modest entrance fee made it easily accessible. You can walk around, dine, discover exhibitions of fashionable painters or listen to magnificent concerts. It is here that a part of the musical creation is played, with the great composers of the time, Handel or Arne, but also newcomers like the Scotsman James Oswald: the 1740s are pivotal years, witnessing the rise of the provinces and the arrival of a new society which prefers English or Scottish songs to Italian opera.
